depends.  lifting weights at a low weight/ high repetition can help you burn a lot of calories without putting on weight.  if you are looking to see a number go down, do not lift to gain strength, lift to gain endurance.  But that being said, there is nothing wrong with gaining muscle weight at all.

Aerobic exercise in general helps with weight loss because it requires sustained activity, and that burns calories.Heavy lifting tends to be anaerobic and short duration.Yes, it depends on how you go about it.  Your trainer will probably want you doing some strength training in addition to working weight loss.  Lifting can be part of that.

I think aerobic exercise in combination with weight lifting is the best combination for losing weight.
