I have an Anxiety/Panic Disorder. And I'm on meds. for it. Can anxiety cause mood swings? I mean like going from being mean to someone to being very nice?I'm just thinking about getting off the meds.

I've had it for over 20 years and I think it can make a person act differently than they normally would act in certain situations. If you are in the midst of an episode it can make you seem strange, because anyone in panic mode acts in whatever kind of way they think will calm them down or get them out of a situation that they aren't comfortable in. If you are on meds, they can have side effects too. As far as alternating between mean and nice, I never felt like that because of the disorder itself. I think this is most likely a side effect of the meds.

Anxiety can definitely influence your mood. If you are stressed about something, you are much more likely to snap easier, and give in to raw emotion. When you are less anxious and have less on your mind it is much easier to think about what an appropriate reaction to a situation would be and how to act on it.

Negative emotions (like sadness, stress, anger, etc.) causes your Serotonin production to be low; when your Serotonin level is low, you are more prone to getting Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Depression, etc.Medication like Antidepressants (SSRI - Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor) helps to boost Serotonin level. But there are natural ways to do it without medication. There's this strange herb called "St John's Wort" - it is said to be more effective than Prozac. No, it is not for mild depression only and ignore those sayings. In fact, it does help anxiety and panic-attacks as St John's Wort works like prozac. Other natural ways will be exercise, diet, more exposure to light, etc.The problem is that, even if your Serotonin is balanced... you have that "learned behavior" in your mind. You need to break that initial cycle to destroy that learned behavior - Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) does this. A technique that you can use without CBT will be Distraction... There are several other techniques to help cope them!Ok, to use Distraction: Firstly, try to....Extracted from Source.

Jackie:  Unfortunately that is pretty common with those meds. When I was on them I felt like a zombie most the day.  I certainly wasnt the same person. I became short tempered and irritable.  Not a good person to be around. I got off the meds because of all that stuff.  Couldn't take it anymore.  If you want to try a natural alternative to those drugs please try Panicyl.  It does basically the same thing without all the mood swings and side effects.  its what I use now.  Hope this helps!
