I was wondering if I could make a very nutricious snack item for my rats that included dry or canned dog food. I was considering making a mix including the following: cooked macaroni noodles, boiled egg, boiled chicken, fresh broccoli, cauliflower, tomatoes, spinach, peas, carrots, romaine lettuce, etc. Would this be a nutricious snack. If no, why not? How could I modify it to make it suitable? Also, would it be better to make a mix of dry cereal, dry oats, dried pasta, cheerios, etc.? Maybe I could make both occasionally? How often could I feed a mix of this nature, once a week, twice a week, etc?I was also wondering if feeding cooked meat would encourage cannibalism. I've heard that this is possible with hamsters, but was wondering if it was a possibility with rats.Any other recipes/treats/foods that your rats enjoy would be great! Thanks.

I've never heard of a rat who became cannibalistic after eating meat & think it's highly unlikely.  On the other paw, we're vegetarian & that includes our rats.  We do give them some veggie dry dog food mixed in with their whole grain cereals (about 20% dog food) & they also get veggie dog biscuits.  Most of our rats *love* hardboiled egg but they only get this on occasion.Rats don't need a whole lot of protein & too much can cause skin problems.  A bit of canned or dry dog food would be ok, but I wouldn't give them any on the same day they had chicken.  Also, canned dog food would spoil quickly so don't give them too much @ a time.  Keep in mind that not only does dog food tend to smell bad, it can make your rats' poop especially pungeant-- we learned this when we adopted rats who had been eating meat-based dog food with their regular food.Your mixes sound good, especially if the cerals are whole grain & sugar free.  I'd serve the meat on the side though  Also, some ppl advise that rats shouldn't eat spinach b/c of the oxilates it contains.  Opinions vary, but we don't give spinach to our rats.  Too many veggies @ 1 time can cause digestion problems.  We give ours veggies about every other day & fruit a bit less.

It sounds like a really good meal for your pet. Kinda like Dinty Moore meals. You have a lot of what rats like and the nutrition they need is in it also. As you know rats like a verity of foods so, if you made both I'm sure they wont mind it at all. No meat doesn't encourage cannibalism. Food can not change the personality of your pet. If your pet shows cannibalism it was born that way. I gave you a sight that has snacks you can make and other ideas of food for your pet. Sounds like your having fun putting all your meals together. I also gave you a sight to make a club house for your pets. Good luckJamie

Yes that first mix is okay, just dont add any cabbage/ bruxel sprouts. its bad for them.dried pasta=bad.  it makes them sick.  any sugary/fatty cereal or nuts is very bad too.  feed it to them, untill they finish it, then re-fill again and again =).  rats= no cannibalism... just trust me. O_O . meat (cooked only) is good for rats, but TOO much protein isn't good.  buy them rat blocks, they are great.

It's not the greatest but if as a rare treat then ok.Despite what people think, dried pasta is one of the best foods for rats and should be part of their daily base mix. A woman called Allison Campbell is the leading authority on rat nutrition and her basic diet, called the Shunamite is available herehttp://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/information/guides.php?subject=shunamiteWherever you are, the biggest and best site ishttp://www.fancy-rats.co.uk
