I finally found a dog food that contains no artificial colors / preservatives or by-products. But even that's not good enough because it doesn't have enough protein. I was planning on booking an appointment with the veterinarian to discuss what is best to feed her, but everyone is saying it's pointless because they don't get much education in dog nutrition. And the vet i go to promotes the science diet , and I've heard that's not a good brand because of the by-products in it. I want to feed her the very best there is for her to obtain optimum nutrition. Cost isn't a problem , I just want her to have the best . It seems commercial food is just not good enough as there is always something wrong in every one of them I find. What am I supposed to feed her ?  I would greatly appreciate some help here with this, someone who knows exactly what they are talking about when it comes to dog nutrition . Do I buy her good quality red meat or chicken from the store , and does it have to be cooked or not . But if I fed her a diet of just meat , she would be missing other nutrients . Well as you can probably tell I'm a little confused here lol and would love some help with this . Thanks in advance for your advice =) I live in Australia so please don't give me American dog food brands. ThanksI've had my dog for 3 years and she's in a very healthy condition , but I don't think her current food is good enough , I'm just having trouble finding one that is

Don't get into raw feeding unless you have done a TON of research on it. I don't know what they sell in Australia, but some quality foods are: Innova puppy, evo (not for puppies), blue buffalo, and canidae.

http://www.dogfoodanalysis.comcheck out the foods listed there and their ratings/ingredients  etc.6 star food being the best..i find protein of 26% in a food that contains NO by products, no corn  etc.  to work the best...i have seen many many cases of dogs with kidney issues who have consistently been fed HIGH protein food.you should be able to buy Frozen Raw beef patties for dogs...as a supplement if you so feel

Every dog food brand says it is the best.  Every person has their own opinion on what is the best, depending on what they heard, read, know or think they know.  If the label says it is complete and balanced for your pet's age and activity level, then it is probably going to work just fine.  Whatever works for your dog is right.  The more you ask around, the more confused you will become. If you're interested in feeding raw food, there is a good book on raw diets by the very educated and knowledgeable veterinarian Dr. Ian Billinghurst (he's in Australia, too) that you can find either at the BARF (Biologically Appropriate Raw Foods) website or at http://www.dogwise.com .  Raw diets include raw fruits and veggies as well as organ meats, not just muscle meats. It's great that you are concerned about your dog's food.  Just don't let it make you crazy.  I feed my dog some raw and some commercial food.

If you want to be 100% sure of what you're feeding your dog, make your own dog food. A dogs diet should consist of 40% meat or protein, 30% vegetables, and 30% starch (like rice).Make up different combinations of things like chicken, turkey, beef, rice, potatoes, oatmeal, noodles, carrots, broccoli, etc. You do not need to add seasonings, but you can add a tiny bit of garlic to add interest for your dog. You can also grind up eggshells (yes, the shells) and add that to their food. The shells have a lot of nutrients including calcium that is really good for you dog. Oh, and you should thoroughly cook any meat you give to your dog. Some raw meat is ok, but it's better to be safe.
