Please no answers from those who haven't watched it. Opinions don't count if you're not educated.Turn on your tv now and watch it. It's where she says the government wastes money on studying genetic material in fruit flies, which they use to try to fine what causes autism.** typo, meant "find."Yamanka: Please go to school. Scientists use rats, fruit flies, etc in almost every initial study regarding genetic disorders.TheOther: You should go back to high school too. No...grade school. The CAUSE isn't in fruit flies. They simply use them to study WHAT causes it.Poyzin: Lol ok, did you miss the part where I said no uneducated answers? Take your own advice.Uncle Wayne 7/8: Exactly, lol.Poyzin(again): Wow, did you just learn in your Rhetoric class what a "straw man argument" is? Good for you for staying in school. Now see, it doesn't qualify as such because there is SO much more I could be making fun of her for. Did my clarification help?Good for you (and most of you) for knowing what I'm talking about. Maybe you guys can show the few uninformed people who bothered to try and answer what genetic research is all about.Need to Know: You said "would be better spent on more important things like a cure for this terrible disease." I'm sorry, but is autism not qualify as a terrible disease to you? Your answer was a tad bit contradictory. Unless you think that autism isn't a real disease.Dstelth: You're right, she did say Paris, France, but the news reporters corrected her in saying that in was in the U.S. Why would she be concerned with France's finances anyway? She can't even answer a question right, lol.

She doesn't understand how science works.

It is just so typical of the stupidity spewing from her mouth.

I really dont think the cause would be in fruitflies.Fruitflies are totally different from humans.I may of failed my science classes, but its common sense.

I didn't hear that part of the speech. But most human genetic research on other organisms is done on fruit flies. Because for being so easy to breed and manage their genetic structure is surprisingly similar to that of humans.Again I didn't hear that part, what I heard was her advocating funding for special needs children's schooling. But if that's what she said then she clearly doesn't understand science, and its yet another reason she's not qualified to be vice-president.

"Yamnka" or whatever the name was, said it all. Fruit flies don't cause autism so why bother? I'm pretty sure Palin and conservatives think that way.

Another reason to despise the Republicans - anti-science, anti-intellectuals.

So what you are saying, in effect, is that Sarah Palin's opinion does not count. Why? Cause she is not in your words "educated".  Flunking out of 4 colleges and then finally getting a degree in Cheer Leading does not count as being educated. -- smiles

I find it difficult to use think and palin in the same sentence..there is no way this person should be an example of caring, intelligent, strong women..she is an abhoration of the stepford wivesand she shows signs that she cannot be educated or is unwilling to learn

She has once again shown her ignorance of science. I thought everyone knew all biological scientific research is done on lower life forms. Fruit flies reproduce rapidly and therefore exhibit genetic mutations much faster.http://nihrecord.od.nih.gov/newsletters/10_03_2000/story05.htm
Quote
Decades of study have revealed that the tiny insects, which bear little resemblance to people, nevertheless share much of our genetic heritage. Fruit flies possess strikingly similar versions of the genes that promote normal human development and, when altered, contribute to disease. [end quote]Richard Feynman, a giant in particle physics, started a Caltech commencement address in 1974 with the following:[begin quote]"During the Middle Ages there were all kinds of crazy ideas, such as a piece of rhinoceros horn would increase potency. Then a method was discovered for separating the ideas -- which was to try one to see if it worked, and if it didn't work, to eliminate it."[end quote]As a species, we continually study, learn, examine and re-examine ideas, discarding the faulty and outdated, and replacing them with new. To do otherwise would lead to stagnation and a return, not to the Middle Ages, but to the Stone Age. I, for one, have no desire to return to the days of witch-doctors (ahem) and superstition.
