My dog is 16, and over the last year has started having trouble standing up and getting up and down stairs. Over the year it has gotten a little worse, and when we took her to the vet he said it was arthritis and gave us meds to put her on.  They have made a TON of difference, she is up and around more and when she knows she is getting a treat she is running and jumping like a puppy again.  Recently though, on the few occasions she has trouble standing up, she defecates while trying to stand up.  Does anyone know why she might be doing it?  Could it be from the strain of trying to stand up?  The vet said not to worry about it, that she is just old and it happens.  But Im still concerned.

16, my goodness - that's quite old for a pup!It sounds like you're on the right track - getting her on pain meds for her arthritis is the best for keeping her comfortable.  If at any time they seem to have quit working, contact your vet, and he may either switch medications, or "stack" another mild pain reliever on top of the one that you're using.I agree with you about his defecation.  While older dogs can lose elasticity in their inner sphincter (forgive me if I sound gross with my technicalities), causing them to be incontinent, if it's only happening when he's *really* trying to get himself up and going - you're probably right, it's the straining.  Now, it's possible that he has lost *some* elasticity, which makes it a bit easier for this to happen, but unless it's occuring at other times (i.e. while he's sleeping, just laying with you), I'd blame it on the stress of rising.Good luck with your boy!  What a wonderfully long life you've given him =)

It could be that  your dog is starting to lose control of his bowels, which happens in older dogs, and the strain of getting up may cause him to defecate if he's losing that muscle control.  It might be a good idea to take him to a different vet to get checked over, just to make sure there are no other health problems going on with him.  They might be able to give him meds to help control the defecation problem.  You must have really taken care of your dog, for him to be 16 and still running and jumping.  Good luck to your dog.  Hope I helped!
