.A family member began taking antidepressants about 6 months ago.  I don't know exactly which medication she is taking.  While her depression is now under control, her behavior is questionable. She now behaves in a childlike manner. She routinely gives her children candy for dinner and then says "don't tell anyone," and when they fight with each other she joins in rather than disciplining them.  She is giddy and distracted during conversations.  She picks fights over silly things.  She tries to gossip and stir up trouble for others.  I tried gently speaking with her about my concerns. She brushed me off.  She claims that she was never depressed in the first place and that the medicine has not really changed anything. (Her depression was quite serious and quite apparant to everyone who knows her.)Are these delusions and childlike behaviors "expected" when someone is on antidepressants? Is there anything I can do to help her when she doesn't believe she has any problems?

No, she shouldn't be behaving like this. It could be that her dosage is too much. Do you know what her diagnosis was from her doctor? It almost sounds like she is having a manic episode. Do you know what anti-depressents is she taking and the dosage? If so, look up the drugs to see what the side effects are.

Maybe she's on the wrong pills.  Tell her to see a doctor for you, and tell her that u're really concerned for her.

it also could be that this is the way she truley is inside, and the anti depressants are allowing her to feel comfortable being herself.I know since Ive been taking anti depressants Ive been more openly the person I want to be..  most of it is positive, but occasionally if someone is judgemental towards something I do, I will voice my thought if their comment was rude instead of holding it inside.

I don't like psych meds and that is the reason. I have been on many for depression and they never helped me, but they did cause me to hallucinate, get migraine headaches, become very agitated, get dizzy spells to the point of passing out, or regress to childlish thinking, just like you are describing. Your friend can have them prescribe something different, or have them change her dosage, but based upon my experience with them, she will never find normal, she will only trade one problem in for another and sometimes you trade your depression in for schizophrenia, heart disease, diabetes, liver damage, seizures, or even death. It is my opinion that it is best to accept yourself for who you are and learn to deal with it. A drunk uses alcohol to nullify his problems, which only creates more problems, well drug treatment and depression work the same way. Tell her to get therapy so she can learn to discover and correct the root of the problem. There is always a reason someone becomes depressed, correcting the cause will cure her. I've found that the only people these drugs seem to help are those who don't really need help in the first place because their lives are already balanced, they just hit a bump in the road, and when the bump is cleared they have a miraculous recovery, it is when a person can't resolve their problems that treatment always seems to fail. ;-)

anti-depressants come with a warning about altering mood and behaviors.sense anti-depressants are made to balance the chemicals in your brain it is possible that she is on the wrong dosage, and that is causing an imbalance of other chemicals.she need to see her doctor asap, to have her dosage or possibly the whole prescription changed.if she does not have this problem taken care of, she can be found unfit and her children will be taken out of the home.if she does not listen to you but you honestly see a problem there get  some people together, and prepare for an intervention.....sometimes that's what it takes to get through to people.good luck.
