What is the best way to deal with this?  I live in a house built in 1930 (not very well)  and i noticed some mold on a violin case in my basement.  I have bad allergies and have been sneezing/wheezing a lot and I need to fix this.  I bought a dehumidifier ( what is the best setting for humidity control?) it is set up in the basement.  I am going to go through everything this coming weekend and put things that are not in sealed container sin sealed containers and wash things down a bit.  I was also thinking of renting a paint sprayer and using a paint for mold.  I just use the basement for storage and laundry mostly.  Any other suggestions?  Are there things I can put in the plastic bins with seasonal clothes/ blankets to prevent mold?

you have to eliminate moisture/humidity for thats how they survive. that will stop it completely. there are also anti mold paints. cover all pipes with special material. put lots and lots of charcoal. those absorb moisture.

One big problem with basements, especially those used mostly for storage, is that there is no moving air. This allows humidity to build up and settle, which causes mold to form. A humidifier is a great idea. The humidity level should be between 40 and 50%. Over 50% will promote mold.

most of the moisture getting into old basements is because the was no sealant or it has died in the floor and/or walls. have them scoured and treated, and install some ventilationit will end up cheaper than electrical systemsjust ensure the clothes are perfectly clean and dry before you put in the bins, each in a separate sealed bag will prevent any mold from traveling from 1 article to another .

A homeowner can even take it a step further to prevent water from entering by waterproofing the basement walls and foundation from the outside. According to the website, one can dig a hole around the basement to get at the walls and footings to water proof the area. Also, be sure to remove mold growths from heating and cooling systems. One shouldn't install carpet and padding into a basement because if water ever seeps in, the hassle of removing the carpet will be a tedious job, especially if the carpet and padding is wet. Also, carpet and padding become breeding grounds for mold growth, dust mites, bacteria contamination and other environmental threats.

Mold can be very dangerous and bad for your health. I wouldn't be surprised if the mold in your basement is causing your allergies to flare up. I used to work for a fire and water damage restoration company. I dealt with mold a lot and we had special chemicals to kill it along with commercial dehumidifiers. Many times your home insurance will cover mold remediation. Sometimes mold is hidden behind walls or in crawl spaces or other areas where you might not see it. I'd have professionals take a look at it.
