I've had acne for a few years now and I have tried pretty much everything out from Benzyl peroxide to antibiotics, none of which have made a significant difference. Does accutane actually clear blemishes? What is it like to be on the medication, are there any noticeable side effects? =)

One of the most common ways of treating acne is the use of retinoids. Retinoids are substances derived from Vitamin A, which attempt to cure acne by normalizing the lifecycle of follicle cells. There are two types of such substances, based on application: external (topical) and oral. The best known external retinoids are Retin-A, Differin and Tazorac, while the oral retinoids list is headed by the popular Accutane. However, about one quarter of the patients who used Accutane or other drugs based on isotretinoin may relapse and require additional treatment. But the biggest drawback of retinoids is the long list of side effects, which sometimes makes retinoids look like a disease rather than a cure. The most common side effects are dry skin and nosebleeds. Many patients have also reported liver problems, while a few complained of depression. However, the scientific community is still split on the issue of depression. More seriously, isotretinoin is known to cause birth defects, which is why female patients have to use two separate forms of birth control or vow abstinence during the treatment. Pregnant women are not allowed to use anything but the mildest treatments. The bottom line is that retinoids are a good idea if one can cope with the side effects. This begs the question: why not use something just as effective, but without the side effects. Acne treatment systems, such as ClearPores: http://www.clearpores.com/clicks/clickthrough.html?a=150901 are also popular because of their success in dealing with the condition, but lack the extreme side that makes retinoids a pain to use. The choice between these treatments is yours.

Yes, it works.  Absolutely. But, the side effects can be really bad.I stopped taking Accutane after only a month.  I was depressed, and my entire body ached.I decided that nothing about my appearance was worth the pain and despression.

Yeah, accutane's great, I have tried everything and its the only thing that has worked for me. The only problem I had was my face was really dry and red the whole time I was on it, but it was worth it in the end.

i have never seen accutane not work. i had really bad acne for about 4 years and ahd tried absolutley everything from pills to topical stuff. i started taking accuatane about 5 or so months ago and i don't have any acne now.  most people are on it for 4-5 months and it is supposed to clear your skin for good after treatment.the only side effects that i experienced was being tired (muscle-wise) when i played sportsother than that i would recommend it to anyone with bad acne =]

I've been on all that stuff to.  The antibiotics worked great for me, but once I get off them it flares back up.  I tried proactive and all kinds of stuff.  Neutrogena Skin ID is the only thing that is working for me.  I've been on it for 3 weeks and so far I only have 2 pimples left!  Which is GREAT!  And it's much cheaper than all that other crap.
